This large Romanesque rood cross is what St. Francis of Assisi was praying in front of when he received his commission from Christ to rebuild the dilapitaed church he was in. The original still hangs in the Basilica of St. Claire in Assisi, Italy. The San Damiano Cross is an icon crucifix as it displays not just the body of Christ, but also images of those who were related to Christ's Crucifixation.
Christ stands out from the cross, not just in relief, but his brightness against the reds and blacks of the background. Around Jesus' body are five of his followers, and smaller, Roman witnesses. At the top, God's hand is shown giving his blessing to Jesus' sacrifice. Next is Jesus climbing out of his tomb with angels greeting him.
This crucifix by Joseph's Studio is 10.5"H x 8"W and made of a resin-stone mix. Giftbox.
